Clinical Trials

What are Clinical Trials?

Rowden Surgery has over 20 years of experience in clinical research and enjoys an excellent reputation. We work in partnership with many leading pharmaceutical companies and academic bodies.

All studies we take on are chosen carefully, so that the practice as a whole can beneift from the research. All research carried out is subject to ethical standards that promote respect for our patients, protecting their health and rights. This also keeps the practice up to date and encourages overall health monitoring of the patient population.

Patients who choose to be involved in the studies receive individual consultations from the research doctors and careful monitoring from the research nurses on a regular basis. Suitable patients for each study are identified through a database search and are then approached by the research team.

Our Research Team!

Doctors: Dr Gaunt, Dr McKibbin and Dr Voss

Research Nurses: Teresa Connolly and Clare Macdonald

Clinical research is exciting and stimulating for both patients and the research team. It provides an opportunity to be involved in cutting edge medicine and the development of future treatments. The majority of our studies involve new medications in their final stages of development, allowing patients to benefit from superior treatments which are not otherwise currently available e.g. the latest cholesterol lowering medications for people with heart disease, new inhalers for asthmatics and COPD patients and new medication options for diabetic patients.

Our Current Trials

We always have lots of different Clinical Trials ranging across several specialities.

Trials can be anything from flu to respiratory, pain to diabetes. Patients are seen here at the surgery during the trial and will follow a pre-agreed schedule. Many patients benefit from these trails and access many medication before they are available to the public.

Rowden Surgery is part of a sentinel network where practice data is used for supporting surveillance, quality improvement, research and education. This is all GDPR compliant and it is not possibile to share identifiable data. We are currently involved in virological and serological surveillance for Covid-19.

Currently our team are researching:

  • New medicines for Diabetes
  • New medicines for lowering Cholesterol
  • The impact of Chronic Kidney Disease
  • New medications for patients with COPD
  • PRINCIPLE STUDY - new treatments for Covid-19

These are often changing but patients matching specific criteria will be invited for a screening and will be asked to get involved.
