Asthma can be a frightening condition but we aim to optimise your asthma control so that you are able to use the minimum amount of medication to manage your problem well.
Come and see us in surgery, or see our dedicated asthma nurse to discuss your management and get your annual check up. You will also need to be seen annually to have any existing prescriptions updated.
More information on asthma can be found at the National Asthma Campaign website.
We offer a comprehensive childhood immunisation programme. The immunisation clinic is run by a Doctor and a Practice Nurse every Monday (except Bank Holiday) from 1.00 - 2.15 pm.
Children will automatically be sent appointments at the appropriate times. We strongly believe that prevention is better than cure and feel that it is essential that children are protected against these potentially serious diseases.
Diabetes is a serious illness that requires regular follow-up. We can provide most of this care within the practice, but we also use external services provided by outside agencies where appropriate.
The specialist nurse in the Diabetic Clinic will perform your annual check and review your recent blood test, management of co-existing diseases that impact upon diabetes and referral for insulin support where needed.
It is very important to note that hospital-based diabetic clinics are moving away from full annual checks to a problem-solving approach. Therefore, even if you have been to a hospital clinic for an annual review, they are unlikely to have performed the complete range of tests that are recommended for annual follow-up. We very strongly encourage you to come to the annual check that we offer all diabetics, even if you have been seen in the hospital too.
There is lots of helpful information at the Diabetes UK website.
Rowden Surgery is taking part in the National Diabetes Audit (NDA). The NDA checks to see whether people with diabetes are getting good care. There are very strict rules about how your information is used and stored.
There is a patient information leaflet available here: Diabetes Audit Leaflet and for more detailed information you can look at the main website here: National Diabetes Audit. If you do not wish to be included in the audit please let the surgery know.
All doctors offer advice on family planning and most methods of family planning. We also have a trained nurse in family planning and she will be happy to discuss all methods of contraception including emergency contraception with you, although regular planned contraception is the simplest, most efficient way to avoid an unplanned pregnancy.
Also several of our doctors' fit intrauterine devices (coils) and contraceptive implants.
Following confirmation of pregnancy, you should contact the maternity unit for delivery at either Chippenham Birthing Centre or at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.
Influenza and Pneumovax
Annually, from the end of September we run a programme to vaccinate eligible patients. The surgery will not send you a letter inviting you but may send you a text message if you have let us know your mobile number. To make an appointment in one of the scheduled flu clinics please ring our dedicated flu line 01249 479812 (active during flu season).
If you are over 65 you will also be eligible for a Pneumovax immunisation (if you have not had this previously). Please mention this to the receptionists when you telephone us to make your appointment.
Several of the partners perform minor surgery for a variety of conditions. Your registered doctor will discuss the options available with you.
Primary Care Psychological Service (Counselling)
Should you feel that you might like to see a Psychological Therapist, please call on 01380 731335. A referral from a GP is not necessary in order to see a Psychological Therapist, though it may be helpful to discuss this matter with your GP to ask for advice.
This service aims to help people deal with anxiety, depression, stress and other emotional difficulties. Sessions which will focus on helping people to find ways of coping and moving forward in life can be offered both individually (based at the surgery) and through taught courses and a variety of other self help options.
Please see the Primary Care Psychology Service Website for more information or take a look at the Counselling (IAPT) Leaflet available:

Everyone knows that smoking is one of the most destructive things you can do to your health. It is never too late or too early to give up smoking.
We are always ready to give help and advice within the practice about stopping smoking. Current regulations also mean that we can help by prescribing nicotine replacement therapy.
The Stop Smoking Clinic provides specialist advice and support to those wishing to stop smoking.
